What is Abdominal Massage Therapy?

Maya Abdominal Therapy is an ancient technique that has been known and practiced by healers for thousands of years. It represents an unbroken chain of knowledge handed down from generation to generation of midwives, healers and shamans. The techniques incorporate a holistic approach to wellness including massage, herbs, nutrition and emotional and spiritual healing. Maya Abdominal Massage is an external, non-invasive and nurturing treatment of the abdominal area.

  • PMS/Depression with menstruation

  • Pelvic congestion, pelvic pain

Why do it?

The organs of the abdomen and pelvis, including the uterus, ovaries, prostate and intestines, may have shifted, or become swollen or inflamed, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi. Blockage of the flow of fluids and chi through the pelvis can be a primary cause for a long list of symptoms. These may include but are not limited to: pelvic floor pain, digestive issues, poor circulation in legs, prostate enlargement or discomfort, low back pain, frequent urination and incontinence, bladder infections, fertility challenges, painful periods, irregular periods, PMS, vaginal yeast conditions, endometriosis, painful intercourse, varicose veins, endocrine (hormonal) issues, and aching legs.

 What causes this to happen?

Poor pelvic alignment, car accidents, chronic constipation and straining and other stresses to the ligaments that support the abdominal and reproductive organs, falls to the sacrum, running on cement surfaces, repeated pregnancies close together and extended pushing during childbirth, to name a few.

I’ve had a hysterectomy – how does this therapy help?

Women who have had hysterectomies also benefit from Maya Abdominal Therapy.  The techniques may improve circulation in and around scars and assists proper flow of lymph, which often becomes blocked after surgery and results in swelling, burning, and deep aching pain in the pelvis.  By utilizing uterine massage techniques on a regular basis, scar tissue may be prevented from forming in the pelvis after surgery.  Ligaments and other remaining organs also benefit from improving circulatory flow to the pelvis.

How do the techniques support digestion?

Many anxieties and emotions through life are stored in our body's tissues and organs. A very common place is in the organs of the digestive system. Those so called "butterflies in your stomach" can lead to constipation, indigestion, heartburn, gastritis, and eventually to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Gasto Esophageal Reflux (GERD), Crohn's and more.

Stresses and emotions cause the small intestine and colon to be "twisted or kinked" leading the blockages in the flow of peristalsis. Surrounding fascia creates adhesions that mal-position organs and impede proper blood flow and enzyme secretions. These techniques may slowly improve fascia adhesions, scar tissue and may remove "kinks" in the digestive tract. Often there is a dramatic improvement after just one session when combined with proper diet and self-care.

Will the techniques help with digestion problems following abdominal surgery?

Scar tissue and facial adhesions can often cause problems with digestion after abdominal surgery. Again, by improving circulation it may break down the scar tissue and adhesion from past or present surgeries. A few sessions combined with castor oil packs, diet and self care are often used depending on the restriction for optimal success. Make sure you wait for allow 4-6 weeks or at the consent of your health care provider before applying this technique.

Indianapolis Therapeutic Breast Massage

For Post- Mastectomy, Post-Augmentation or explant, or Healthy Breasts

Breast massage therapy is vital to the health of your breasts and can provide immense relief for lactation issues and post-surgical conditions, including post-mastectomy. Come and visit - we have a small, welcoming environment where we would love to help you with any breast issues which may be causing discomfort or fear.

Originally created to help women through their journey post-mastectomy, this treatment has proven helpful for a wide range of breast concerns and for promoting and maintaining healthy breast tissue.

Post-Mastectomy (Breast Massage)

This massage offers both physical and emotional relief from pain, swelling and discomfort that follows the trauma of breast surgery. Therapeutic breast massage, using The Spurgeon Method™, is a crucial therapy for women who are recovering from breast surgery. Using a combination of lymphatic drainage, bodywork and proprietary massage techniques, our method works to relieve pain, reduce swelling and ease breathing. For those suffering from limited range of motion, a single session may offer profound and immediate results.

Healthy Breast (Breast Massage)

Breast Massage is vital to the health and well-being of breast tissue. Lymphatic fluid which keeps our tissue healthy is moved through the body in three ways: respiration, muscle movement and manual manipulation. As there is no muscle in the breast itself, and only tiny muscles in the lymphatic vessels, the fluid is most efficiently moved with manual manipulation. This massage alleviates congestion, pain and swelling in breast tissue and increases range of motion in shoulders, neck and upper torso. Instructions are given for home care to promote healthy tissue.

Post-Augmentation (Breast Massage)

Designed to relieve congestion, swelling and discomfort following breast augmentation surgery, this treatment will encourage symmetry, restore pain-free range-of-motion and help prevent capsular contracture. Using a combination of lymphatic drainage, bodywork and proprietary massage techniques, our method works to relieve the chronic pain that often occurs after surgery. In addition to the dramatic healing benefits of professional therapeutic breast massage, daily self-massage is a simple routine you can do at home to help maintain healthier breasts.

WHY BREAST MASSAGE?

Did you know that massaging your breasts is one of the most important routines of a woman’s day?

Our lymphatic system is responsible for keeping our body’s tissues clean and healthy and for producing the cells that kill off bacteria, viruses and cancer cells in our body, i.e. our immune system.  The lymphatic fluid that flows through our body to do this work is moved in three ways; respiration, muscle movement and manual manipulation.  Without this movement, the fluid becomes stagnant and the tissue it permeates (fascia) becomes thicker and more uncomfortable, or dis-eased.

This fascial membrane is continuous throughout our bodies, and compression or congestion in one area affects the whole, causing aches, pains and swelling.

Exercise is vitally important in moving this fluid.  When we exercise, our muscles move, our breathing rate increases, and the lymph fluid is pumped around all body parts – except the breast!

The increase in flow to the breast is minimal as the breast tissue has no muscle.  It lies atop the pectoral muscle in the chest.  Add to that the fact that most women constantly restrict this area with a bra and it is easy to understand why breasts become painful and problematic.

Manual manipulation is the only effective way to ensure fluid movement throughout the breast tissue.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, performed before breast massage, ensures that the lymph fluid from the breast has a pathway in which to drain.

Regular breast massage helps to keep tissue healthy and pain-free.

WHAT IS POST-MASTECTOMY MASSAGE?

An essential component of a modern, comprehensive medical treatment plan, post-mastectomy massage offers life-changing pain relief and healing for patients who are recovering from breast cancer, mastectomy, lumpectomy, and other painful breast surgeries. Through therapeutic massage, we can work to relieve your pain, improve your range of motion and help you overcome the physical and mental obstacles to feeling like yourself again.

What is Holistic Pregnancy Massage?

Holistic Pregnancy Massage focuses on the special needs of a new mother as her body goes through the dramatic changes of the childbirth process – pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and nursing. Many dramatic internal physical changes take place in a woman’s body when she is pregnant, after birth, and during nursing. Specific supportive touch is vital to a mother’s psychological and physiological well-being as she adapts to her changing body.

Holistic Pregnancy Massage may help to ease the pain and discomfort of pregnancy, help the uterus maintain balance in the pelvic bowl, reduce congestion in the low back, as well as provide a nurturing, harmonizing touch. This in turn, nurtures the life of the unborn child; increasing nutrition and vital oxygen via increased blood flow.

Why do I need Postpartum Maya Abdominal Massage ?

Postpartum sessions are designed to help restore your body to its pre-pregnancy condition and to address the stress of carrying, and caring for, a newborn baby. The uterus is decreasing in size each day and the abdominal massage is vital for its proper healing as well as helping to support the bladder and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Research shows that it can take up to two years for a woman’s uterus to return to a somewhat normal condition after giving birth. Postpartum is the final stage of birth and can last several months. If you have had a caesarean section, the massage may even helps to reduce and relieve the tightness of scar tissue.

While we tend to focus on the newborn child, it is vital that we receive care for our uterus after the birth to aid in a healthy pelvic floor, healthy uterus for future pregnancies, as well as uterine and bladder ligament strength throughout our life.

How will I be lying on the table?

Depending on what week gestation you are at the time of your appointment, you may be positioned in either a face-up, side-lying or semi-reclining position. The side-lying position is most common with the abdominal/uterine treatment done as you are semi-reclined. Additional pillows will support your body to make you feel safe and relaxed.

How will I feel after The Massage?

In addition to being relaxed, you may feel lighter in your lower back, abdomen and legs. You may even feel more blood flow circulating throughout your body as your uterus settles nicely into your pelvis.

After an initial period of feeling a little sleepy, most women experience an increase in energy and freedom from aches and pains. This can last for several days, possibly weeks. Because Maya Abdominal Pregnancy Massage increases circulation it is important to drink water after your session. This can aid in healthy blood production for you and your baby and may help in the removal of any waste products that may have been released during your session.

A healthy, happy, relaxed mother
is a precious gift to a new baby.

“I wish I had known about Maria for my first pregnancy! She has so many awesome resources that she is willing to share and such a wealth of knowledge that she can tailor to each client. That kind of individual attention is so comforting and has helped build my confidence and calm some of my fears about going through labor this time.

— T.G.

“I have gone to visit with Maria twice. The first visit was enough to keep me going back. Maria’s knowledge of the body and pregnancy was exactly what i needed. I’d been suffering from low back pain from early in my pregnancy - i’m currently 36 weeks - and after our visit it was the first time I hadn’t had pain for a few days in a row while keeping up my regular activity! The Maya Abdominal massage/work she did helped move the baby off my bladder and for the first time since I became pregnant I didn’t have to go to the bathroom through the night. I went back two weeks later and we checked in with the techniques she’d offered for me to try at home. It was a wonderful experience and I HIGHLY recommend her for anyone but especially for expecting mothers. It’s been wonderful to hear people I know in the community who have been seeing her with varying circumstances and all have such great things to say! I plan to see her AT LEAST once more before our little man makes his grand appearance and definitely afterward for postpartum healing.

Indianapolis Cupping, Gua Sha & Moxabustion

Cupping, Gua Sha & Moxabustion

Cupping helps to release chronic pain, specific tension areas as well as help support the energetic body in balance and well being.

Massage Cupping therapy has been in practice for over 5,000 years around the world as a therapy to bring relaxation and relief to the body from South America to Egypt. Cups are applied to the body and negative pressure is used to help target stagnant/tense muscle groups, bring blood flow and release to the area.

I have studied cupping with various teachers and in several traditions including a certification in Contemporary Cupping, Mesoamerican, Ancient European and Asian cupping. I have learned cupping practices from traditional healers in Mexico City as well as New Mexico, Minnesota. Cups may be moved across the body to enhance circulation and lymph flow, or they can be left in one spot to pull toxins from the body.

How does cupping work?

Cupping relieves symptoms by moving out old deoxygenated blood and metabolic waste out of the tissues, allowing fresh, nutritious, oxygenated blood to move into the tissues. It also stretches the muscle fibers, and separates the fascial/connective tissues from the muscle so they are moving independantly, allowing them to be more flexible and strong as a result.

What Are The Marks Left Cupping Therapy?

The marks that are commonly left after a treatment are the result of stagnant blood, lymph ad toxins being pulled to the surface. The marks are not bruises. They fade as toxins and blood from within the muscles and tissues are flushed out of the system. Usually a mark will not re-occur in the same spot when regular sessions are applied. After the stagnant blood/fluid is removed, better curculation is promoted and toxins are able to leave the body.

Cupping Testimonials

"Maria is not only highly educated and extremely proficient, but brings a passion and warming presence to her treatments that make her one of the most well rounded professionals in the healing arts/therapy industry I have met. I received a deep cupping session this afternoon and feel relaxed and rejuvenated at the same time. Highly recommend! ." W.C- Indianapolis.

" Had an amazing appointment with Maria Renner. If cupping is good for the Olympic athletes, I figured it would be good for me! Relaxing and educational. Maria explained each step as she went along. I highly recommend Maria." C.C - Indianapolis

Gua Sha

Gua Sha, or scraping, is an ancient technique which can be used to support cupping treatments, or on it's own - depending on the client's specific need. Gua Sha stimulates blood flow and promotes healing.
